PRISME - Crédit Agricole Agriculture and Agri-food economic bulletin

France has regained its position as the world's leading wine producer, but its 2014 exports tell a sorry tale. Volumes are expected to fall further, with weaker penetration of its main markets, especially the USA and the UK. Some positive factors are coming into play for the 2014-2015 season. The harvest has been good and global consumption is picking up. But questions remain as to whether French wine can win back market share.

Demand for "-free" products such as lactose-free, palm oil-free, sugar-free and gluten-free products has been growing strongly for years, following the boom in "plus" products enhanced by the addition of healthy ingredients such as vitamins and minerals. In this context, the gluten-free market is certainly the most symbolic as a result of its rapid growth and also the speed and scale of its transition from a therapeutic product intended for a limited public to a health product for a wider public, verging on "mass-market". This segment's recent growth looks sustainable, boosted by the growing number of patients diagnosed with coeliac disease, but above all by innovations that have made it possible to introduce glutenfree products into general foodstuffs as a health food item. However, although the gluten-free segment offer numerous agri-business players significant growth opportunities, their involvement may be limited by barriers to entry relating to capital investment and R&D costs.
