The performance of the UK economy was surprisingly strong last year. After almost flat growth in 2012, GDP expanded in each quarter of 2013 and annual growth came in at 1.8%. Private consumption was by far the strongest contributor, but other GDP components such as public consumption, inventories and, to a minor extent, net trade also added a small part to annual growth.
