The total public deficit reached 7.8% of GDP in 2017: a (minimal) improvement; even if we refer back to the recent 10% maximum in 2015, and to the 8.6% of 2016. The primary deficit is virtually unchanged at 1.7% of GDP. The ratio of public debt to GDP rose close to five percentage points over 12 months, to 74% of GDP at end-2017.

The current account deficit of 10 billion dollars has significantly narrowed to just 0.5% in 2017, after 3% in 2016 and a peak of 4.8% in 2014. The fall can be explained by the improvement in the trade surplus (USD 67 billion), which itself can be put down to sustained export growth (17.5%), combined with a still modest uptick in imports (9.5%), and to an improvement in the terms of trade. Consumer prices proved astonishingly muted in January (2.9% over 12 months).
